Goodbye my sweet little Brat

Brat Seavey - came into our lives on February 4, 1996 at the approximate age of 2 and left us today, October 8, 2010.

As I sit here crying with a broken heart, I know Rob and I did the bests thing for our darling Brat the Cat. Today, at 4:00, we drove her to the Cat Clinic and said our goodbyes. For all our friends who met Brat or took care of her from time to time, I know you will miss her too. She was a beautiful cat and had so many funny ways about her...... how am I ever going to look at a can of whip cream the same.

Cold, covered in ice and snow, Brat was found by my borther-in-law outside of his house during a winter storm. I originally took her in to care for her thinking since she was obviously a house cat (no claws) and that someone would soon claim her. Little did I know she would become a permanent family member for the next 14+ years. Lots of "Family Loves" and laughing took place during these past years but the last few months have been really tough. Today I found out that in human years, she was 84. Her kidneys were going, she couldn't hear and she was loosing balance and eye sight. Rob and I both knew she was in pain with all the crying and knew it was only a matter of time before she would leave us.

I kept asking Rob "Are we sure" and his response was just what I knew in my heart "it's time" Why does it hurt so much? I held her in my arms cuddling her like I always did whispering " mommy loves you" and then felt her body go limp..... I miss you already Brat... I miss you. Thank you for all the love and wonderful memories, for all the affection and tenderness, for all the laughs and especially for all the "family loves" you brought into our lives. You were and always will be the Queen of our home.

  3. I'm crying with you as I read your post. Having done that earlier this year, I understand how you're feeling. And I know there will come a time when you can think about her without crying. Until then, I pray that God helps you both through your grief.

  4. I feel your sadness as we had to say "goodbye" to our much loved "Butterscotch". Our pets are a big part of our lives and hearts. Hopefully your tears will turn to smiles as you remember your "Brat". Chanlady

  5. I'm so sorry Nicki, I know how difficult this was for you and Rob. Losing Brat will leave a hole in your heart, but I know that all of the sweet memories you have of her will warm you and help you smile again.

You rescued your sweet baby when she needed you most, and you've rescued her again from living with needless pain. That's our joy, and that's our responsibility, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

    Love and healing hugs.

  6. Carolyn said it best...You did rescue her twice...and she rescued you right back...Just think of all the love you would have missed had she not been in your life.

I wish I could come up there and give you a big hug and just sit with you.
I will keep you and Rob constant in thought as I always do.I love you so much my friend.

  7. Dear Nicki, my heart goes out to you. When you are close to a loving family member, it doesn’t matter if your “child” has two or four legs. You grieve the same. Thankfully you have wonderful memories! Our Boomer is 15, and every time I see signs of his aging (missing a jump for example), it breaks my heart. I want to pretend the clock is not ticking.... Gentle hugs, Cathy

  9. Oh Nicki, I am so sorry to hear about Brat. It brings tears. I think any of us that have a beloved cat or two can relate. I already told my kids...don't talk to me for 2 days.
Remember how lucky you were to have had a precious pet for all those years my friend.

  15. Nicki, so sorry for Rob and you about Brat. You gave Brat the best years. My cat disappeared last April and we had him 8 years. He was my baby. The vet always called him the beautiful cat with the attitude!

  17. I feel for you Nicki. I think we love our pets like we love our babies because they depend on us to provide for their needs and they give us unconditional love. Deciding it is time is the hardest thing to do. Big hugs, sweetie.
